Masterclass – Karri Valley Resort

Masterclass with Tony Hewitt at Karri Valley Resort
This Masterclass had a full compliment of participants and was an outstanding success. The venue was excellent, the weather was kind and the early morning mist on Lake Beedelup performed its magic. The sunset shoot on Salmon Beach was stunning. Thanks to all who attendeed and to the staff at Kari Valley. We will definitely include this venue for next year’s Masteclass series.
Tony Hewitt, AIPP Grand Master Photographer, Hon Fellow AIPP, and Denis Glennon AO, Member AIPP, present this, the fourth in the Masterclass series “The Evolution of the Photographer”.
The venue is one of Western Australia’s hidden jewels of tranquility – Karri Valley Resort, Pemberton, Western Australia.
Nestled on the edge of trout filled Lake Beedelup and surrounded by majestic karri forests, the natural charm of Karri Valley Resort provides the perfect setting for the focus of this Masterclass. Accommodation for all participants has been reserved in the best twin-share Lakeside rooms, which have private balconies overlooking Lake Beedelup. All rooms at the resort have recently been renovated, are spacious and comfortable with large en-suite bathrooms. Participants desiring to share a chalet with seperate bedrooms, located in a forest setting at the resort, may do so, at no extra cost.
Participants (their spouses/partners/children) wishing to arrive a day early, or linger a day or so longer, may do so; we have arranged a “Special Masterclass Rate” for the Lakeside Rooms. One is reluctant to leave the quietude of Karri Valley and the many photogenic locations nearby and return to the busyness of city life. Why not make it a “long weekend”?
Photographers living adjacent to Karri Valley who wish to participate in the Masterclass lectures and photo shoots, are welcome. A reduced fee is available for those participants; see below for details.
The dates are Fri 9th (for dinner), Sat 10th & Sun 11th September 2011
THEME OF THE MASTERCLASS:
In keeping with the themes of earlier Masterclasses (“The Quiet Mind” at New Norcia and “The Artist’s Eye” at Rottnest), the theme for this Masterclass is “The Hidden Dimension”.
Our focus will be the introduction of other dimensions in your images. Tony and I will show how to get people to look and and experience your photographs as ‘readers’ (not just ‘viewers’). To view an images is a passive activity. Photographs having ‘depth’ engage people, draw them in, they linger, move about and explore your photograph. The aim is to create within the reader a deeper, fuller, longer experience. We will look at ways for the reader to associate and connect, to be intrigued and involved in the image. The stronger the memory of your images, the greater the impact on readers’ hearts and minds. Deeper photographs give us a way to create more engaging one-frame pictorial stories. Photographs created with greater depth pull readers in, invite them not only to look at your photographs, but look into them, to take a visual journey through your image and see the things and feel the emotion, you saw and felt when you pressed the shutter button. We will explore:
- Depth & Perspective – painters for centuries have used perspective to build in an illusion of depth.
- The Frame as a Cube – placing elements in a cubic frame invites readers into your pictorial story.
- Depth through Colour – the impact of colour on the ‘feel’ of an image
- Depth through Focus – a very natural and intuitive way to create depth.
- Depth through Optics – exploring the impact of a lens’s angle of view.
- Depth through Light – using ‘chiaroscuro’, that wonderful technique of the Renaissance painters.
- Depth in B & W photographs – the use of texture to give visual clues to added dimensionality.
- Deeper Emotions – the connection between what we see and our emotions.
- Depth through Helicon Focus – the why, the technique, the almost unbelievable results.
- The majestic beauty of Karri Valley and the landscapes and seascapes of Windy Harbour and Salmon Beach
